To Escape From The Sun

September 2008

To Escape From The Sun is a video installation depicting Albert Camus' 1942 novel L'etranger. The film brings together one hundred narrators in an assemblage of collective storytelling. Cochrane apportions the novel, presenting each narrator with a selected section of the text. The cadence, timbre and intonation of the multiple voices are discernible, as a different speaker portrays each excerpt, often without familiarity to the original tale and context.

The video alludes to the broken dialogue of the passer-by as the story is fragmented and then reassembled. His methodology is positioned between reiteration and reconfiguration, which interrupts the linearity of the original narrative. Every extemporaneous recital is imbued with personal significance, inviting an intimate and prolonged consideration of the subject and the text.
